什么是超現實主義？

What is Surrealism?

“超現實主義”這個詞是由法國詩人紀堯姆·阿波利奈爾于1917年發明的，對于大多數現代事物，他一貫熱愛。他在同一年里兩次用到這個詞：一次是他的戲劇《Les Mamelles de Tirésias》（1917），他將其形容為“超現實主義戲劇”——一個名副其實的副標題。這部戲劇描述了一個缺乏母性本能的女人寧可當士兵也不愿做母親，在她要求長出胡須的同時發現自己的乳房正從身體上脫落。她的丈夫不在意地聳聳肩，聲稱那他就自己生孩子。他真這么做了：一天里生了四萬零四十九個。這的確是一部超現實主義戲劇。

“The French poet—and lover of most things modern—Guillaume Apollinaire invented the word in 1917. He used it twice in the same year: once for his play Les Mamelles de Tirésias (1917), which he described as a “drama surréaliste”—a subtitle that lived up to its billing. The play features a woman devoid of the maternal instinct who would rather be a soldier than a mother, and claims to be growing facial hair while remarking that her bosoms are becoming detached from her body. Her husband shrugs and declares that he will just have to have their babies on his own, which he does: producing 40,049 in a single day. A drama surréaliste indeed.”

《記憶的永恒》這幅作品關于性無能（達利巨大恐懼的來源）、時間的無情以及死亡的侮辱。達利將畫的背景設置在一個眾所周知的人間天堂，通過把這個丑陋的超越現實的畫面植入我們的腦海中，來毀掉人們在這類地方的愉快體驗。這幅畫談不上漂亮，但很聰明。這一點和它的創作者很像。

The Persistence of Memory is a painting about sexual impotence (Dalí’s great fear), the relentlessness of time and the indignity of death. Dalí has set his painting in a recognizable paradise-on-earth in an attempt to spoil our enjoyment of such places by planting this hideous hyper-real image in our minds. It is not pretty, but it is clever. Rather like its creator.”
